September 18-20, 2006/ What will organic farming deliver? This conference is organised by the Association of Applied Biologists in conjunction with COR - the Colloquium of Organic Researchers. Organic farming systems are increasingly recognised throughout the world as a realistic alternative to intensive industrial agriculture. Consequently there is also an increasing amount of research activity both formal and informal linked to the study of organic farming systems. This biennial conference aims to provide a forum where approaches to, and unresolved issues arising from research in organic farming systems can be aired and new thinking enabled. The themes identified for the main platform sessions are consequently broad; the widest possible interpretation should be made about topics suitable within each of the following themes: Health, Profit, better environments. The deadline for call for papers is 3rd February 2006.

June 29, 2006/ BIOACADEMY The Bioacademy is an annual event held in Lednice in the Czech Republic, not far from the Austrian and Slovakian borders. Apart from the specialist programme, meetings between agriculturalists and other specialists take place. The conference also involves a practical part including excursions to organic farms and organic processing enterprises in the Czech Republic and the neighbouring countries. In May 2006 researchers representing all aspects of European research in organic food and farming will present their work at a joint congress "Organic Farming and Rural Development" to be held in Denmark. The call for papers is available at the conference homepage. The congress will combine public meetings as part of EU supported projects in collaboration with the biannual Danish congress, which usually attracts more than 600 participants.

April 05, 2006/ CHANNEL Project The programme of the final international Channel conference to take place in Budapest, April 5-7 April, 2006 is now available. The CHANNEL project aims at opening channels of communication between the associated candidate countries and the EU in ecological farming. News # 7/7 March 7-10/ New Partnership! The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements
(IFOAM), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)
and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) announce a joint
project to facilitate the development of an East African Organic
Standard, which will help to make organic products from East Africa more
recognizable on supermarkets shelves throughout the world.
The UNEP/UNCTAD Capacity Building Task Force on Trade, Environment
and Development (CBTF) project Promoting Production and Trading
Opportunities for Organic Agricultural Products in East Africa, launched
in Kampala on October 19, 2004, established a Regional Standard
Technical Working Group (RSTWG). Comprising representatives from
standards bodies, certification bodies and the organic sector from the
three countries, the RSTWG held its first meeting in Kampala on October
24, 2004. It met again in Arusha on March 6 to discuss the contents of
the standard. The RSTWG will now be strengthened by IFOAM‘s full-fledged
support. This new partnership will be announced on the occasion of the CBTF Regional Workshop for Organic Agriculture, March 7-10, 2006, in Arusha, Tanzania. All draft papers are available on the CBTF website at http://www.unep-unctad.org/cbtf/openArusha.htm.
